"To Q.H.F., Rome, 1985"

High above the veil of laughter

Your glance to the lacquered ceiling

Fastens my attention, leaves me waiting

The suppressed duration of your last sigh.

Unclasping your fingers, each chance

Mood extends that warm feeling

That fell on your friends, who hated

Patience with pleasures gone by.

Eagerness of young eyes urges

A slow stillness after song-

Answered with your whispering:

Divine gentleness surges

Through the beauty of your old limbs, made young

With a prayer to the unpoured wine.
